Claude Desktop

Add Oort to the Claude app on your Mac, Windows or Linux computer.

Claude Desktop with OortClaude Desktop starts the oort mcp server on your machine over stdio. The server keeps your memories in ~/.oort, also on your machine.YOUR MACHINEstdioClaude Desktopyour agentoort mcplocal MCP serverMemory~/.oort
  1. Install the CLI.

    Terminal
    npm i -g oortmem

    Skip this if you already have it. Node.js 22.15 or newer.

  2. Connect Claude Desktop.

    Terminal
    oort connect claude-desktop

    Oort backs up the file, prints the change, then adds one server named oort. Add --dry-run to see the change without writing it.

  3. Restart Claude Desktop.

    Quit Claude Desktop fully, then open it again. Closing the window is not enough.

  4. Check it is connected.

    Start a new chat and ask: "What do you remember about me?" Claude can now call Oort's recall tool. Allow it when Claude asks.

What Oort writes

claude_desktop_config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "oort": {
      "command": "/abs/path/to/oort",
      "args": ["mcp"]
    }
  }
}

command is the full path of your installed oort. The rest of the file stays as it was. The first change keeps a copy of the original next to it, ending in .oort-backup.

Undo

Terminal
oort disconnect claude-desktop

This removes only the oort entry. Your memories stay in ~/.oort. If something does not work, see Troubleshooting.

Where the file is

SystemFile
macOS~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
Windows%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
Linux~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Which memories it sees

Claude Desktop does not start servers inside a project, so it usually sees your global memories. To give it one project, add that folder to args:

claude_desktop_config.json
"args": ["mcp", "--project", "/path/to/repo"]

Oort treats an entry you edit as yours from then on. oort connect and oort disconnect leave it alone.
