VS Code

Add Oort to VS Code. Each workspace gets its own memories.

VS Code with OortVS Code starts the oort mcp server on your machine over stdio. The server keeps your memories in ~/.oort, also on your machine.YOUR MACHINEstdioVS Codeyour agentoort mcplocal MCP serverMemory~/.oort
  1. Install the CLI.

    Terminal
    npm i -g oortmem

    Skip this if you already have it. Node.js 22.15 or newer.

  2. Connect VS Code.

    Terminal
    oort connect vscode

    Oort backs up the file, prints the change, then adds one server named oort. Add --dry-run to see the change without writing it.

  3. Restart VS Code.

    Reload the window: open the Command Palette and run Developer: Reload Window.

  4. Check it is connected.

    Open the Command Palette and run MCP: List Servers. oort should be in the list.

What Oort writes

mcp.json (your user settings)
{
  "servers": {
    "oort": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "/abs/path/to/oort",
      "args": ["mcp", "--project", "${workspaceFolder}"]
    }
  }
}

command is the full path of your installed oort. The rest of the file stays as it was. The first change keeps a copy of the original next to it, ending in .oort-backup.

Undo

Terminal
oort disconnect vscode

This removes only the oort entry. Your memories stay in ~/.oort. If something does not work, see Troubleshooting.

Where the file is

SystemFile
macOS~/Library/Application Support/Code/User/mcp.json
Windows%APPDATA%\Code\User\mcp.json
Linux~/.config/Code/User/mcp.json

Profiles

oort connect edits the default profile. A named profile keeps its own mcp.json. In that profile, run MCP: Open User Configuration and paste the entry above.
