Codex

Add Oort to the Codex CLI and the Codex IDE extension.

Codex with OortCodex starts the oort mcp server on your machine over stdio. The server keeps your memories in ~/.oort, also on your machine.YOUR MACHINEstdioCodexyour agentoort mcplocal MCP serverMemory~/.oort
  1. Install the CLI.

    Terminal
    npm i -g oortmem

    Skip this if you already have it. Node.js 22.15 or newer.

  2. Connect Codex.

    Terminal
    oort connect codex

    Oort backs up the file, prints the change, then adds one server named oort. Add --dry-run to see the change without writing it.

  3. Restart Codex.

    Close Codex and start it again in your project.

  4. Check it is connected.

    Terminal
    codex mcp list

    You should see oort in the list.

What Oort writes

~/.codex/config.toml
[mcp_servers.oort]
command = "/abs/path/to/oort"
args = ["mcp"]

command is the full path of your installed oort. The rest of the file stays as it was. The first change keeps a copy of the original next to it, ending in .oort-backup.

Undo

Terminal
oort disconnect codex

This removes only the oort entry. Your memories stay in ~/.oort. If something does not work, see Troubleshooting.

Notes

  • If you set CODEX_HOME, Oort writes $CODEX_HOME/config.toml instead.
  • Oort replaces only the [mcp_servers.oort] block and checks that every other table is unchanged.
  • Codex starts the server in the folder you run it from, so memories follow your project.
