Gemini CLI

Add Oort to Gemini CLI.

Gemini CLI with OortGemini CLI starts the oort mcp server on your machine over stdio. The server keeps your memories in ~/.oort, also on your machine.YOUR MACHINEstdioGemini CLIyour agentoort mcplocal MCP serverMemory~/.oort
  1. Install the CLI.

    Terminal
    npm i -g oortmem

    Skip this if you already have it. Node.js 22.15 or newer.

  2. Connect Gemini CLI.

    Terminal
    oort connect gemini

    Oort backs up the file, prints the change, then adds one server named oort. Add --dry-run to see the change without writing it.

  3. Restart Gemini CLI.

    Exit Gemini CLI and start it again in your project.

  4. Check it is connected.

    Gemini CLI
    /mcp

    You should see oort and its tools.

What Oort writes

~/.gemini/settings.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "oort": {
      "command": "/abs/path/to/oort",
      "args": ["mcp"]
    }
  }
}

command is the full path of your installed oort. The rest of the file stays as it was. The first change keeps a copy of the original next to it, ending in .oort-backup.

Undo

Terminal
oort disconnect gemini

This removes only the oort entry. Your memories stay in ~/.oort. If something does not work, see Troubleshooting.

Which memories it sees

Gemini CLI starts the server in the folder you run it from, so memories follow your project.
